CHIN 263 (INTERMEDIATE CHINESE LANGUAGE CULTURE II)

This course is designed for students who have taken Chinese 262, or have been placed at this level by the Chinese Placement Test. It is the continuation of Intermediate Chinese Language and Culture I, with further development in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Mandarin Chinese. It offers students the opportunity to expand their vocabulary, improve their grammatical accuracy, begin to speak and write in paragraph length, and gain a greater cultural understanding of the Chinese speaking world. The course is based on a student-centered, critical-thinking approach to language analysis/acquisition.

CHIN 401 (FOURTH-YEAR CHINESE I)

This course is designed for students who have taken Chinese 302, or have completed the Rice-in-China program, or have been placed at this level by the Chinese Placement Test. The goal of this course is to raise students’ language proficiency to the level of Advanced-Low in speaking, reading and writing on the ACTFL proficiency scale. The course focuses on reading modified newspaper articles, increasing students’ accuracy, fluency and appropriateness level in their speech and writing, fostering their abilities to study independently by utilizing learning strategies and promoting critical thinking. It offers students the opportunity to use Chinese to describe events, express opinions, make arguments and gain greater social, cultural, political and historical understanding of modern China.

CHIN 311 (Accelerated Intermediate Chinese I, Heritage class)

 This course is designed for students who have taken Chinese 212, or have been recommended to 311 by a Chinese lecturer, or have been placed at this level by the Chinese Placement Test. The goal of this course is to raise students’ language proficiency to the level of Intermediate High in reading and writing. The course focuses on reading dialogues and newspaper articles, understanding authentic speech and developing the skills to discuss more complex topics. It offers students the opportunity to describe events, express opinions, make arguments and gain greater social, cultural, political and historical understanding of modern China.

CHIN 312 (Accelerated Intermediate Chinese II, Heritage class)

This course is designed for students who have taken Chinese 311, or have been recommended to 312 by a Chinese lecturer, or have been placed at this level by the Chinese Placement Test. The goal of this course is to raise students’ language proficiency to the level of Intermediate High to advanced low in reading and writing. The course focuses on reading authentic newspaper articles and developing the skills to discuss complex subject matters. It offers students the opportunity to describe events, express opinions, make arguments and gain greater social, cultural, political and historical understanding of modern China.
